Hall of Fame

The Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame recognizes Central Catholic alumni - and other prominent members of the Central Catholic community - who have brought honor to the school through their achievements both during their high school years and after. We honor them in the Hall of Fame with the hope that their achievements will serve as an example for others.

Martenne Bettendorf ‘12

Athletic Inductee

Martenne Bettendorf is one of the most accomplished volleyball players to graduate from Central Catholic. Martenne made the varsity team her freshman year, and went on to lead the team to three consecutive state championships in 2009, 2010, and 2011, including setting a 33-0 record in 2011. She was named State Champion Player of the Match in 2010 and 2011, Mt. Hood Conference Player of the Year, and unanimously voted Oregon State 6A Player of the Year in 2011. Also In 2011, she was named Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year and won the distinguished High School All-American award. To date, she holds the school record for most kills (1,839).

Martenne continued to play volleyball for the University of Oregon and was a 2012 NCAA Finalist runner-up. In 2015 she received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American, the AVCA First Team Pacific Region, and the Pac-12 First Team All-Conference. 

Martenne went on to play professionally in Europe, receiving a contract with Azerrail Baku in Azerbaijan. She continued playing internationally in Germany, Switzerland, and France until 2020. 

Today, Martenne still shows determination in her work and continues to be guided by her faith while contributing to the community.

Martenne exemplified these qualities as a team captain, high school All-American, and a three-time state champion. Steve Halligan

Faculty/Staff Inductee

Steve Halligan spent his entire 43-year professional career at Central Catholic. As a dedicated teacher and coach, he showed generations of students how to be productive citizens of our country and our world, while guiding Ram basketball teams to five conference championships and a state title in 1994. Known as a passionate (and sometimes fiery) coach, it was his effectiveness as an educator that most impacted thousands of Central Catholic students. He challenged students to think critically and to become active, informed citizens with the confidence to share their opinions. Students who had Steve Halligan as a teacher left Central Catholic with a deeper understanding of what it means to live in a democratic society. 

Steve’s former colleagues describe him as a caring mentor for new teachers and as a catalyst for expanding the Advanced Placement (AP) Program, adding AP US History and AP Government and Politics to the curriculum.

One of Steve’s former students, Chris Myers ‘84, had this to say about him, “Steve was the quintessential teacher, which is also what made him an outstanding coach. He was passionate, knowledgeable, funny, and consummately organized. Most importantly, he cared deeply about students’ learning and well-being.”

Since his retirement, Steve has joined his wife, Teri, and son, Anthony, in tutoring his granddaughters for their online Web Academy courses. 

We honor Steve Halligan for his skills as a teacher and coach, his commitment to the students of Central Catholic and the way he inspired them for decades to be their best selves.

There are thousands of students that he has, through the breadth and depth of his knowledge, beckoned to be better versions of themselves, to become deeper thinkers and better citizens. Pat Harrington ‘68

Civic Inductee

At Central Catholic, the name Harrington is synonymous with excellence and leadership; Pat Harrington ‘68 embodies both. A three-sport athlete at Central Catholic, he was named to the All-Metro team for football and basketball his senior year, during which he also served as Class President. At the University of Oregon, he also served as Class President during his junior and senior years, and was the recipient of the Koyl Cup Award for Outstanding Junior Student in 1971. Graduating in 1972 from the University of Oregon with a degree in Community Service and Public Affairs, he also earned his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1979.

After a stint as the Events Director at the Memorial Coliseum, Pat spent the next decade as the first Executive Director of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts where he oversaw the approval, planning, design, capital campaign, public bond election, operation, building, and completion of the five-theater complex. Along the way, he earned an impeccable reputation in Portland’s business community, which led to the next step in his career path.

After his work with the Performing Arts Center concluded, Harrington subsequently began what would become his 28-year career at BORA Architecture & Interiors, 24 years of which were served as the firm’s Managing Principal. Elevating BORA in multiple ways, he was instrumental in the company receiving numerous awards, including the Governor’s Arts Award for providing free office space to Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and Portland Arts and Lectures, the first-ever given to an architecture firm. He oversaw countless projects, many of which involved school renovations and new construction. These include Lincoln High School, Mountainview High School, Vernonia High School, La Salle Catholic College Preparatory, St. Mary’s Academy, De La Salle North Catholic High School, and culminating in the completion of the Monsignor Tim Murphy Center at Central Catholic, where Harrington played instrumental roles in the feasibility study, design, community approval, city permitting, financing, and budgeting stages of the project. 

We honor Pat Harrington for his impact on Central Catholic, the city of Portland, and the numerous organizations in Portland and across the country that have benefitted from his integrity, leadership, and business acumen.

The David Heller Foundation for Healthy Teen Hearts and the Heller Family

Service Inductee

The David Heller Foundation for Healthy Teen Hearts has left an indelible footprint on our community and state, one that Central Catholic’s David Heller ’07, a dedicated student athlete and basketball fanatic who passed away in 2005 (and for whom the foundation was named), could never have imagined. For David’s parents, Bev and Jeff, and his siblings, Anna ‘08, Darren ‘13, and Heidi, creating and sustaining the foundation has been a labor of love. Since David’s untimely passing, the Heller family has worked tirelessly to grow the foundation, while simultaneously funding a second endowed scholarship, the David Heller ’07 Memorial Scholarship, at Central Catholic. 

Born of a tragedy; a traumatic, early death of a beloved son and brother from an undiagnosed heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, today, the foundation serves thousands of teenage athletes, saving lives through cardiac screenings. The foundation has also donated 250 Automated External Defibrillators (AED), life-saving, portable devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, which has benefited hundreds of citizens in small towns and schools across Oregon. Additionally, through its scholarship program, more than 40 high school seniors from around the state have benefitted from more than $40,000 in scholarship awards. 

Recently, the Foundation made a transformational gift of $500,000 to the Providence Heart Institute, funding the David Heller Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Clinic. The clinic will support cardiac screening for teenage athletes and educate the public about the importance of cardiac screening.

Monsignor Tim Murphy ’58, in thinking of the Heller family, is reminded of a verse from scripture. He says, “When the scriptures tell us of the ‘smallest of seeds growing into the largest of trees’ so that the ‘birds of the sky come to dwell in its branches,’ it is the perfect metaphor for the Heller Family and for how they continue to honor their son and brother.”

We honor the Heller Family; Bev, Jeff, Anna, Darren, and Heidi, and the David Heller Family Foundation for Healthy Teen Hearts for their commitment to honoring David’s legacy, and for their vision, integrity, and service to Central Catholic and the broader community.

Kaitlin Inglesby ‘10

Athletic Inductee

Kaitlin Inglesby may be one of the most decorated athletes to have graced the halls of Central Catholic. She shone on the mound as a varsity softball starter all four years, leading the Rams to Mt. Hood Conference (MHC) Championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010. She was named MHC First Team all four years while at Central Catholic, was a two-time Oregon State Player of the Year, an UnderArmour All-American in High School award recipient, and the Gatorade Player of the Year for Oregon in 2010. Topping off her accomplishments as a Ram, Kaitlin was named Most Valuable Player in 2008, 2009, and 2010 by her Ram teammates, who also honored her as Most Inspirational in 2010. Additionally, one of her proudest moments as a Ram was being honored at her graduation with Central Catholic’s Insignis Award, which is an award given to graduating seniors who exemplify what it means to live out the mission of the school.

After being recruited by the University of Washington (UW), Kaitlin was struck in the face by a line drive traveling 60 mph during practice her freshman year. Her injuries required months to mend the 47 broken bones in her face, yet she managed to recover quickly and enjoyed a stellar four-year collegiate career. Along with becoming a two-time All-American and four-time All-Pac-12 Conference selection and advancing to the Women’s College World Series in 2013, Kaitlin also played an instrumental part in The Huskies winning four NCAA Regionals during her career. 

Kaitlin also earned the Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medal, which is awarded by universities annually and recognizes student athletes based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics, and leadership.

Kaitlin graduated from UW in 2014 with a degree in medical anthropology and global health. After two years coaching at the University of Massachusetts, she went on to attend Arizona State University College of Law, earning a 4.0 GPA while studying for her Master’s in Sports Law and Business. Currently, she works for GMR Marketing as an account supervisor, overseeing national partnerships for US Bank.

We honor Kaitlin for her accomplishments, both on and off the field, and for her character, grit, and resilience.

Tony Leineweber ‘62

Civic Inductee

Tony Leineweber has a long legacy of contributing, championing, and volunteering for Central Catholic that has spanned over 60 years.

A member of the first honors class at Central Catholic, he ran track and cross country and served as Student Body President his senior year. Always supportive of his school, Tony was also a member of the Cheer team, rooting on other athletes at their games.

Tony continued to build his leadership skills, attending Oregon State University and Portland State University, and earning his master’s degree at the University of Washington. Tony went on to hold executive positions at Market Transport, Ltd., Crown Pacific, and the Portland State University Foundation, among others. 

Throughout his executive career, Tony remained connected to Central Catholic, serving on numerous committees and helping the school with campaigns and projects. He served on the Central Catholic Board of Directors, and was integral on the committee to raise funding for the Monsignor Tim Murphy Center. With faith and a passion for helping others, Tony has been active in the larger community as well. He has been a dedicated advocate and volunteer at Loaves & Fishes, Meals on Wheels, NAMI Multnomah (National Alliance of Mental Health), and the Rotary Club of Portland.

After retirement, Tony was called back to Central Catholic when he was named President in 2015, and served in that role until 2017. Tony also encouraged his class in building the Class of ‘62 scholarship, which is now endowed as The Class ‘62 Legacy Endowment Fund. A true Ram, Tony continues to volunteer at school events and be a champion of Central Catholic.

Capt. Richard Mallon † ‘60

Civic Inductee

Capt. Richard Mallon, Jr. was a man of integrity, loyalty, and faith; beloved by all who knew him. As a dedicated servant, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when he was killed in combat while serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Rich began his life of service at a young age, entering the seminary at Mt. Angel during his freshman year of high school. Although his calling did not lead to the priesthood, the process instilled in him the spiritual, mental, and physical grounding that ultimately guided him to his military career in the Air Force. 

Rich left the seminary and transferred to Central Catholic where he was an active member of the school community. He was an honors student, a member of the Young Christian Students Club, the Rod and Gun Club, and he played J.V. Baseball and Varsity Football. Following graduation, he went on to attend the University of Portland (UP), joined ROTC, and became a member of the school’s nationally acclaimed drill team known as the Mitchell Rifles. He graduated from UP in 1964 and shortly thereafter, enlisted in the Air Force during the United States’ engagement in the Vietnam War.

Rich quickly ascended the ranks in the military and earned the title of captain. He was a talented pilot, and during the Vietnam War completed his first tour that included 100 successful individual combat missions. During his second tour in Vietnam, Rich was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and on January 28, 1970, was declared MIA (Missing in Action). After 18 long years, his remains were finally found and returned to Portland. His funeral included a 21-gun salute and a flyover by McCord Air Force Base jets in a “missing man” formation.

Over the course of his military career, Rich was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, along with many other commendations. He is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial, and honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

We honor Captain Mallon for his many accomplishments at Central Catholic and the University of Portland and during his career in the US Air Force, but most of all we honor him for his integrity, his faith and (although it was cut tragically short) a life well-lived.

Ian Montone ‘85

Civic Inductee

Ian Montone is an accomplished artist manager who, for over two decades, has managed some of the most prolific musicians and actors in the entertainment industry. He continues to make a tremendous impact on the music culture and industry of our country, all while maintaining a high-level of ethics and values in his work. 

Part of the foundation of his character and values can be traced back to his time at Central Catholic, which provided just the right amount of structure, discipline, and academic rigor for Ian. While a student at Central Catholic, he played soccer and football and was the editor of the Rampart. He also wrote for the Scampart, Central Catholic’s alternative newspaper, modeled after the Harvard Lampoon. In his senior year, he was elected Student Body Vice President for Academics.

In the years since leaving Central Catholic, Ian graduated from Occidental College with a major in philosophy and minors in political science and religious studies. He then traveled the world for almost a year before earning a law degree with a focus on environmental law from Vermont Law School and The University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After working for a consulting firm in Washington, D.C., a series of fortuitous events, including meeting the duo Jack and Meg White who had a band called White Stripes, led to Ian combining his career in law with his passion for music. Over time, his foray into entertainment law morphed into Monotone, Inc., his artist management company.

Today, Ian and his team at Monotone, Inc. manage a broad group of musicians and actors, ranging from Jack White, The Shins, LCD Soundsystem, Wallows, Vampire Weekend, to Jaime Foxx and Jonah Hill, to name just a few.

In addition to managing his company, Ian also pursues his passion for soccer as a spectator, and is part-owner of Venezia F.C. in Italy, as well as Vice President at Luton Town F.C. in England. He is also a season ticket-holder for the Portland Timbers. Most importantly, Ian and his wife Mary Ellen are the parents of six-year-old son, Luca, and he considers spending time with his family his favorite thing to do. We honor him for that and for the way he operates his company, Monotone, Inc, ethically and with humility, integrity, and vision.

Jane Murphy

Service Inductee

Jane Murphy has been a devoted Ram in every way for nearly 30 years. In 1993, she stepped into her first role at Central Catholic as the school’s business manager. This was during a period of financial crisis at the school, and Jane worked tirelessly to ensure its financial viability. Additionally, she and her husband, Bill Murphy ‘58, led the way in starting Central Catholic’s very first auction. In the 27 years of this signature event’s existence, they have yet to miss a single one!

Prior to working at Central Catholic, Jane had a 16-year career in business and accounting, and after six years as Central Catholic’s Business Manager, she was ready for a change. Jane went on to complete an accelerated master’s program at Pacific University and came back to teach at Central Catholic. Since then she has held various roles in administration, academics, and athletics. 

Jane’s role in the Ramily deepened when her two children enrolled at Central Catholic. Brian Barkdoll ‘07 and Kara Barkdoll ‘11 were involved as student-athletes and leaders, and Jane actively supported them in all their endeavors–attending athletic events, volunteering with the Parent Association, and in many other capacities. 

Jane’s involvement at Central Catholic has been tireless for many years; she perhaps has achieved the highest number of volunteer hours in the school’s history.

“Jane recently spent more than 100 hours completing a vital  scanning project for the Advancement Office,” recalls Ellie Dir, VP of Advancement. “This was not an exciting project at all, but Jane tackled it the way she tackles everything she does, with a smile, a friendly word and a willingness to commit to a task until it’s completed. There are no words adequate to express the depth of our gratitude for Jane Murphy.” 

Jane’s dedication to Central Catholic is unmatched, even in retirement. You can still see her with her pom-poms at nearly every athletic event and substitute teaching in the school when she is needed.

Michael Rosenbaum ‘68

Civic Inductee

Mike Rosenbaum is an exemplary scholar, leader, and businessman, whose accomplishments merit his Hall of Fame nomination in all categories. 

While a student at Central Catholic, Mike was on the varsity football and track teams and was Captain of both. He earned First Team All-League in Football, and was selected as one of eight scholar athletes in the state of Oregon. He served as Student Body President his senior year, and in the summer of 1967, he attended Boy’s State. At Boy’s State, he ran for and was elected Governor and represented Oregon at Boy’s Nation in Washington, D.C. 

After Central Catholic, Mike attended Harvard University on a full-ride scholarship. At Harvard, he was selected as one of two Oregon finalists for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship competition. He graduated with honors in 1972 and then from Columbia Law School in 1975. 

Mike became Chairman of the Ninth Circuit American Bar Association Committee on state legislation, founded the Rosenbaum Law Group, and remains a member in good standing with the State Bar Association for both Oregon and Washington and for the US District Court for the District of Oregon and the Ninth Circuit Court.

In conjunction with his civic and business achievements, Mike has been active for decades serving his local community. He helped to incorporate the Baker Cabin Historical Society and has served on its board from 1979 to 1989. He founded and incorporated a non-profit called CHOOSE, an organization that raised money for girls’ athletics, provided scholarships for low-income families, and funded sports-related activities in the North Clackamas School District. Mike was also a member of Central Catholic’s fundraising committee that helped raise over $10 million for the Monsignor Tim Murphy Center. Finally, for over a decade, Mike and his wife, Sherie, have provided hot food to houseless individuals in Milwaukie through their restaurant, the Stone Cliff Inn. 

We honor Mike for engaging his intellect to build an incredibly varied and impactful law career along with a successful family life, and for the understated way he makes life better and easier for our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

Brennan Scarlett ‘11

Athletic Inductee

We honor Brennan Scarlett not only as one of the most recruited football players to graduate from Central Catholic, but also for his impact in giving back to the community.

Brennan lettered in four sports at Central Catholic; football, basketball, track, and swimming. He overcame many injuries during this time, but with resilience and a strong work ethic, he persevered at the highest level. Brennan was named 2010 PrepStar All-American and SuperPrep All-American. Brennan received offers from all of the Pac-12 schools and many others including the University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, and Tennessee State University. 

Brennan accepted his offer from the University of California Berkeley where he later graduated as a member of the Haas School of Business. While at Berkeley, Brennan received a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention and All-Pac-12 Fourth Team. He then played his final collegiate year at Stanford University where he earned his Master of Business. He was Stanford’s first-ever graduate transfer and was All-Pac-12 honorable mention. That year was special, as Brennan not only was able to play at Stanford with his brother, Cameron Scarlett ‘15, but he also helped lead Stanford to a Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl win. Brennan went on to play professional football, first for the Houston Texans for five seasons and then for the Miami Dolphins. 

Recognizing the impact of his faith and how others supported his career, Brennan wanted to give back to young people who may not have the same opportunities that he had. In 2018, Brennan started the Big Yard Foundation with a mission based on three pillars: Literacy, Creativity, and Physical Wellness. The foundation serves youth in marginalized communities, hosting book fairs, camps, and other recreational activities. Brennan continues to give back to Central Catholic as well, supporting the Field Lighting Project and students in financial need.

Brennan Scarlett’s impact on Central Catholic and the community will continue with his examples of perseverance, giving back, and focus on faith and family.

Scott Williams ‘87

Service Inductee

E. Scott Williams has made a tremendous impact on Central Catholic’s community for over 20 years by helping to build a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

Scott attended Central Catholic at a time when there were very few students of color at the school. Inclusion and diversity at that time looked very different compared to today; there were no affinity groups nor many opportunities for learning about–and engaging in–topics of diversity and inclusion. Nonetheless, Scott remained an active and engaged member of the school, participating on the football, basketball, and track teams. After high school, he went on to attend Oregon State University and then Portland State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology and a master’s degree in social work. Scott is currently a Program Development Manager in the Direct Clinical Services program for the Multnomah County Health Department on the Behavioral Health Division team. 

Around 2001, Scott reconnected with Central Catholic when a teacher invited him to reach out to students of color in their classroom. Scott began working primarily with Black students, and learned that many of their experiences as students were similar to his own. Determined to be part of the solution and not sit idly by, Scott started working with and creating safe spaces for students. He helped found and lead Central Catholic’s Black Student Union, supporting and empowering students to navigate through racial disparities and marginalized experiences.

Throughout his 20-plus years of engagement within the school, Scott has helped hundreds of students through his mentorship and advocacy, while also working closely with faculty and staff to deepen their understanding and support. His involvement and impact within the school community set Central Catholic on a trajectory of truly becoming a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive place for all.

2005 Boys Cross Country Team

Athletic Team

Incredible teammates, academically strong, and well-coached, are all apt descriptions of Central Catholic’s 2005 Boys Cross Country team. Yet those words fall short in describing the unique blend of talent and stamina, team chemistry, and coaching that propelled this group of young men to the OSAA 4A State Cross Country State title in 2005.

This team, comprised of Kenny Klotz, ’06, Kevin O’Malley ’07, Nick Turner ’07, Luke Wiltshire ’07, Sam Wotipka ’07, Taylor Morgan ’08, and Samot Turina ’09, was unusual in many respects, not the least of which was their team score. Led by senior Klotz, who won the race by more than 20 seconds, the Ram squad placed all five scorers in the top ten scoring positions. A perfect score would be 15 points, with all five scorers in the top five positions, so their team score of 23 points is all the more impressive at a state meet with 151 participants from more than 40 schools. By scoring 23 points at the state meet in November 2005, they set a state record for large schools which still stands today.

Dave Frank, Ram Track and Cross Country Coach recalls, “As for the team score of 23, it was pretty shocking on the day. We knew we had a very good team, but South Eugene’s record of 32 points had stood for 50 years, and we certainly did not expect to break that mark.”

At least five members of this team would continue their running careers at the collegiate level. Klotz ran for the Oregon Ducks, O’Malley for the University of San Diego, Morgan at the University of Arizona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Turina at Gonzaga, and Wiltshire for the University of San Francisco. Today, these young men are building families and pursuing careers.

We honor Central Catholic’s 2005 Boys Cross Country team for their unique athletic accomplishments and dynamic and strength as a team.

Timothy J. Grogan '58 The Central Catholic High School Hall of Fame recognizes Central Catholic alumni–and other prominent members of the Central Catholic community–who have brought honor to the school through their achievements both during their high school years and after. We honor them in the Hall of Fame with the hope that their achievements will serve as an example for others. Timothy Grogan ’58 is a man of honor and devotion to his country and his beliefs. While at Central Catholic, he was a trumpet player in the band, on the Rampart staff, in the Math Club, and a member of Young Christian Students (Y.C.S.) Following Central Catholic, Tim attended the US Military Academy in West Point, NY, graduating in 1963 with a bachelor of science in general engineering. He went on to complete graduate studies at Columbia University, and served as an assistant professor in the Department of English at West Point. While serving in the Army, he held many positions including operations officer, commander, and executive officer in the field in Vietnam. Later his service duties included work in the Pentagon. His awards were numerous, including the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, and Purple Heart. We honor Timothy Grogan ’58 for his dedication to his community, school, and country.
