Students Meet Writer and Social Activist, Kevin Powell

On Tuesday, February 7, students from Central Catholic visited Portland Community College to hear noted writer, poet, and social activist Kevin Powell. His message was both a celebration of America's journey since the Civil Rights era, and a call for a progressive, multicultural coalition that is inclusive and loving of all Americans and all people, regardless of race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, ability/disability, or political ideology. 

Powell is a Jersey City native, and was raised in extreme poverty by a single mother. He was able to attend Rutgers University through New Jersey's Educational Opportunity Fund. Powell is the author of 12 books, including his most recent title, "The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy's Journey to Manhood."
