Juniors

By the end of 1st semester Junior year, students need to have completed 6 hours in each of the four areas of engagement and have a total of 50 hours of service completed over the first 2½ years at Central Catholic. At least ten of those hours will need to be completed in the 1st semester of Junior year. These hours will build upon the service students have done during their Freshman and Sophomore years.

During second semester junior year and into senior year each student will complete

  • A service proposal and plan of action.
  • At least 30 hours of direct service to one agency (completed by April 9, 2024).These hours will need to be tracked on the hours tracking sheet (see below).
  • A service journal related to their 30 hour service placement.
  • 12 additional hours of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Liberation*
  • A Senior Service Paper during second semester senior year.

During the second semester of Junior Year, you will explore agencies that you will want to serve at for 30 hours. After reaching out to agencies and discerning your service options, you must submit a proposal and a plan of action in your theology class that will detail your process for engaging in service from the start of second semester junior year until April 9, 2024 of your Senior Year. Over this time period, you will complete service and reflect on your experience through a guided journal. You will need to track hours each time you serve on an hours tracking sheet. You will need to obtain a signature from your direct supervisor each time you serve. There should be a clear start and end date to your service commitment during this time.  All of these details need to be included in your proposal and service plan of action.

Service will be direct service** to a vulnerable and/or marginalized population***. Go to the Central Catholic Service Canvas page for ideas and options.

You will culminate their service at Central Catholic with a Senior Service paper. This paper will provide you with the opportunity to reflect beyond the name of the organizations with which you partnered and the specific things you did when serving and will invite you to explore how your service experiences of past and present have shifted who you are and your worldview. This essay is a required component of the second semester Christian Service grade and is worth 20% of your theology grade second semester.

*6 additional hours of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Liberation will be earned through attending Central State of Mind each year. If a student is unable to participate in the Central State of Mind, those hours will have to be engaged in through other opportunities students will need to find for themselves in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, & liberation.

**What is direct service?
Direct service is working first hand with people who are in need. This is an opportunity to engage with the people who benefit directly from the service you offer to the agency. Direct service does not include office tasks, working on a computer, warehouse work, etc.

***Who are vulnerable and/or marginalized populations?
Vulnerable and/or marginalized populations are groups that experience the highest levels of socioeconomic exclusion. Groups that can fall into these categories include: women, elderly, people experiencing houselessness, people with disabilities, members of BIPOC communities, refugees, and migrants.
